Sketching plans

Some people do puzzles or soduko. I sketch house plans. Or give myself house plan challenges. The most economical design, the smallest space (e.g. a 6×6 dimension), or even just a dream design inspired by a place I’ve visited (needless to say, I have many beach shack drawings).

The economical house

This sketch is a plan for a 4 bedroom, double storey house. It is contained in the most economical rectangular shape, with a max 6m roof span – cheapest to build as it only requires standard roof trusses.

It has a TV room, scullery and generous proportions – but only comes in at around 220m2. The ceilings downstairs would be a nice 3.4m, with a higher ceiling in the sunken lounge. Guest loo and pantry under the wide, feature staircase that is double volume. A fireplace with exposed flue completes the living room area and provides warmth.

An architect I’m not, but I have learnt what does and does not work on a tight budget.

And theoretically, you can build this house for R2.4 million (excluding land) if you keep your finishes simple and budget tight. Theoretically.
